Tanglewood
Landscapes
by Cara London
Tanglewood, in Lenox, Mass, is the summer
home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. My family has visited every
summer, for the last ten years. We spend our days listening to rehearsals
and music classes, and attend concerts under the stars, in the evenings.
Tanglewood is famous for its open-air Shed, and Ozawa Hall. The grounds
are magnificent. Each year, I set up my easel and paint, inspired by both
the setting and the music. These are some of the paintings I have created
over the last few years.

#682, Phyllis Curtin's Master Class, 2005, 20x16 oil/canvas
I painted outside, while
Phyllis Curtin was conducting a vocal class. While I was working, it
started to pour. I quickly packed up and waited on the porch, so as not
to disturb the class.

The Piano in the Chamber Music Hall, Tanglewood, 2005, 20x16 oil/canvas
When the class ended, I
moved my painting gear inside, because it was still raining quite hard.
The rustic beauty of the space awed me. I had to paint it-- I wanted to
capture the reflections off the rich, black piano and the glow of the white
stage floor as it played off the colors of the wooden structure.

Steinway in the Chamber Music Hall, 2005, 8x8 oil/canvas
After I had worked in
such a painstaking manner, I needed to paint with a certain freedom. This
close-up is a more relaxed interpretation.

This is a view from the
side of the Shed, done primarily with a palette knife.

#637, Formal Garden at Tanglewood, 20x16 oil/canvas
As I worked on this
painting, it began to rain. You can see the dark cloud approaching, at
the top. It was just enough time for me to finish and pack up my things
before it began to pour.

#632, Watching the Tanglewood Rehearsal, 12x12 oil/canvas
We have seen this couple
for the last couple of years. They did not know I was painting
them. I did not know that he is a photographer. He photographed me,
along with my children, as we painted (we were an unusual sight). We both
did not know we were inspired by the other.
